Constant stress can be compared to taking out a huge loan at a high rate of interest. Your body gets a momentary shot of energy for the fight – it mobilises its forces, sharpens attention, raises blood pressure. The trouble is that this debt grows with every day. At some point a “biological debt collector” knocks at the door in the form of sudden burnout, chronic fatigue or persistent inflammation that is hard to deal with.
Stress in itself is not the enemy – in short doses it saves lives and helps us perform under pressure. What is dangerous is its chronic form, when the body stays in survival mode for weeks and months. In that state the body does not spend energy on regeneration, because all its attention goes into coping with the threat. The effect is paradoxical: the longer you stay mobilised, the faster you wear out.

A Loan That Has to Be Repaid
The stress response is a brilliant emergency mechanism. Faced with a threat, the body instantly releases hormones that raise energy levels, speed up the heart and mobilise the muscles. It is a “loan” taken out against future resources – excellent in the short term. The problem begins when the threat does not pass, because it is not an immediate danger but constant haste, pressure and tension.
Science describes this cost with the concept of allostatic load – the “wear and tear” on the body that results from stress mechanisms staying switched on for too long. In other words, the body pays interest on chronic mobilisation. Over time that interest becomes a real health bill. Chronic psychological stress is a well-documented risk factor for many diseases.

The most important mechanism is simple: the body cannot “fight” and “repair” at the same time. In survival mode the priority is immediate action, not long-term regeneration. Persistently high stress hormones shift resources towards mobilisation, and repair processes move to the background. Cells are, in a sense, “cut off” from repair mode.
On top of that comes a quiet fire. Chronic psychosocial stress intensifies inflammation in the body – the same inflammation linked to heart, metabolic and neurodegenerative disease. That is why tension you “cannot see” can wreck health from the inside: not through one dramatic blow, but through the sum of small, everyday burdens.
Why Stress Accelerates Aging
The fact that chronic stress accelerates aging is visible even at the level of cells. One landmark study in this field showed that women experiencing severe, long-lasting stress had shorter telomeres – the protective “tips” of chromosomes, which shorten with age and are one of the markers of cellular aging. The difference corresponded to years of additional aging. That is strong evidence that stress is not just “in your head”.
The mechanism forms a logical whole: chronic mobilisation limits regeneration, fuels inflammation and burdens cells, and together this accelerates the processes we associate with aging. Fortunately, the effect of stress on the body can be managed – it depends to a large extent on how we handle tension and whether we give the body a chance to return to balance.
Why the Mind Alone Is Not Enough
Intuition may suggest that since stress “sits in the head”, thinking rationally should be enough to make it disappear. Reality is more complex. The stress response is not only thoughts but a physiological state of the whole body – tense muscles, a racing heart, an aroused nervous system. Simply persuading yourself that “there is nothing to be stressed about” often does not reach that level.
That is why working with the body, and not only with thoughts, matters so much in regulating stress. Calm, extended breathing that quiets the nervous system helps, as does regular movement that discharges tension, along with sleep, contact with people close to us and a sense of safety. It is worth keeping a balance here: reappraising thoughts (seeing the situation differently) can help, but it works best paired with a physiological “coming down a gear”. The point is therefore not to choose between the mind and the body, but to look after both.
Conclusions
Stress does not have to be (and cannot be) eliminated entirely, but we can learn to discharge it and give the body a chance to return to repair mode. And since the stress response lives not only in our thoughts but in the whole body, working on it – breath, movement, sleep, closeness – should reach the body too, rather than stopping at good intentions.
